Detail Itinerary

Day 1 – Saigon: Arrive mid-morning in

Saigon. After clearing Immigration and Customs, you are met by your English-speaking Vietnamese MilSpec guide and escorted to your hotel in central Saigon. Balance of the day free until approximately 6PM when you enjoy a Welcome Dinner and a Folk Dance show at the Rex Hotel Rooftop Restaurant. (D)

Day 2 – Saigon:

Today you tour Saigon, including Notre Dame Cathedral, the Colonial Post Office, Presidential Palace, War Remnants Museum, the History Museum, a Cholon Pagoda and the Ben Thanh Market. We go to the US Consulate, site of the former Embassy where MPs, Soldiers and Marines fought VC sappers on the first day of the 1968 Tet offensive. On the grounds of the Consulate is the only monument to US Soldiers in Vietnam today. We will request permission from Consulate officials to enter the compound and see this monument. Lunch at a local restaurant. Tonight, dinner at the Majestic Hotel. (B, L, D)

Day 3 – Saigon / Ch Chi / Saigon:

Drive up Highway 1 today, through Hoc Mon, past the entrance to the 25Th In – fantry Division’s main base camp (a request will be made to visit the base – approval by local military and political bodies will be necessary and is realistically unlikely). We will visit several sites around the base including “Ann Margaret.” We see the Cu Chi Military Museum. After lunch at a Pho (noodle) restaurant, we walk through the busy Cu Chi Marketplace. Then we go to a tunnel complex near the Trang Bang (not the one in the Ho Bo Woods) and tour the site. Later we drive past the Heineken brewery in Hoc Mon on our return to our Saigon. Tonight dinner with several former enemy combatants of the 9th VC/NVA Division. (B, L, D)

Day 4 – Saigon / Tay Ninh:

Return north on Highway #1, then go cross-country past the former Cu Chi Military base toward the Ho Bo Woods. We may see Soldiers of the New Peoples Army drilling. Stop at the Cu Chi Military Cemetery where we see the Memorial Benches we had installed last year. Then visit the “Tunnels of Cu Chi” in the Ho Bo Woods. Tour participants will have an opportunity to fire war-era weapons at the firing range. After lunch on a floating restaurant in the Saigon River, continue north through the Boi Loi Woods (now largely a rubber plantation) toward the town of Dau Tieng. Along the way, we stop in the Ben Cui Rubber Plantation where the 1/5 Mech fought a brutal battle on 21 August 1968. SSG Marvin Young (C/1/5) earned the Medal of Honor in this action. Then cross the Saigon River into the town of Dau Tieng, a brigade size base during the war. See the remnants of the short runway that challenged fixed-wing pilots and relics of the French Colonial control of the nearby Michelin Rubber Plantation, such as the above-ground swimming pool that once hosted GIs. Then we drive along a road once hosted GIs. Then we drive along a road paralleling the massive dike that created Lake Dau Tieng. Along the route, stop for photo-ops on the dike and at a VC base marked by a large concrete VC flag. Continue to Tay Ninh City and check into our hotel. (B, L, D)

Day 5 – Tay Ninh:

A day in and around Tay Ninh City. We begin with a walk through the main Tay Ninh Marketplace. Then we drive by the entrance to the former 25th Division 1st Brigade base, known as Tay Ninh West. As with the Cu Chi basecamp, this is still an active military base.

Late in the morning, we go to the main Cao Dai Temple and observe part of the noon service. We then drive to Nui Ba Den, the famed “Black Virgin Mountain.” Visible on a clear

day as far away as Saigon, this iconic 3,000 foot mountain is etched in the memory of tens

of thousands of former GIs. At the base of the mountain, before we enter the park, we visit a military cemetery where VC Soldiers killed in nearby battles are buried. We have lunch and then take a gondola lift half-way up the mountain where we can visit temples, see a deep valley that once housed a VC hospital and see one of the many caves that provided shelter to VC and NVA during the war. A local friend we met on our last visit may show us some interesting caves around the mountain. Later, return to Tay Ninh City and our hotel. (B, L, D)

Day 6 – Tay Ninh/Cambodia:

Today we pick up local guides and drive north of Nui Ba Den. Passing by the area known by GIs as the “Dog Face,” we drive to COSVN nearby the Cambodian border. After touring the military museum, we walk through the former communist headquarters where concrete trench lines and bunkers remain and several buildings have been rebuilt to represent the former complex. Later we bid our local guides farewell and cross the border into Cambodia, obtaining visas at the crossing point. We will either enter Cambodia through Trapeang Phlong border gate near COSVN and travel along the road toward Kampong Cham Town, once an operational area of US forces during the Cambodian incursion or we could head southeast of Tay Ninh and cross into Cambodia via Bavet gate and explore this war-related area before checking in at the casino hotel close to the border gate. We will overnight at a casino hotel in Cambodia. (B, L, D)

Day 7 – Cambodia/Saigon:

After breakfast, we drive south within Cambodia and cross the border back into Vietnam on Hwy 1 near Go Da Ha. Then we explore former bat tlegrounds including the Sugar Mill on the Van Co Dong and Duc Hoa. Later we return to Saigon. (B, L) Note: Full Moon today.

Day 8 – Saigon:

Today we drive to Ben Cat in the former operational area of the US 1st Infantry Division. If we determine that a tunnel complex there is safe, we will explore it. If not, we will continue into War Zone D to explore the Long Phuoc underground tunnel network built by local VA fighters. This was the site of the famous Long Tan Battle and is the site of a former Australian Royal Regiment base. Later, return to Saigon. Tonight, dinner on a floating restaurant cruising up and down the busy Saigon River. (B, L, D)

Day 9 – 12 – Saigon:

Days at leisure to shop or relax by the hotel pool. We won’t have a vehicle or driver on these days, but you can easily get round on foot or take a metered taxi. Your Vietnamese guide can advise you where to get bargains and may accompany you if you wish. OPTION: Those wishing to return to Cu Chi as a day trip may do so. Cost will depend on the number who elect this option. Payment will be made directly to the Guide. Sunday, a Farewell Dinner at the Lemon Grass Restaurant. (Breakfast daily – Dinner only on Sunday)

Day 13 – Saigon:

After breakfast, a midmorning transfer to Tan Son Nhut Airport for your flight home. (B)

L = Lunch
