Itinerary in brief

Fishing Tours in Cambodia

Fishing in Cambodia Fishing tours in Cambodia are the newest, most adventurous and unequalled sport fishing tours in the world! After decades of internal strife Cambodia is a new and emerging holiday destination, and now, for the very first time, the Kingdom is ready to welcome and cater for the world’s ‘extreme’ anglers in search of specimen fish and potential world records. Whether it is fishing one of Phnom Penh’s pristine lakes, the magnificent Tonle Sap Lake (the largest in South East Asia), or the mighty Mekong River, Asia Adventures now provides guided Cambodia fishing holidays for those anglers that want to experience adventure fishing at it’s most extreme.

Fishing the waters of Cambodia provides serious adventure anglers the opportunity to fish for two of the world’s biggest freshwater fish, the mighty Giant Mekong Catfish (up to 3m long and 300kg) and the amazing Freshwater Ray (up to 4.5m long and 450kg). As well as these ‘megafish’ other large species ready to put up a tough fight are out there, such as Cambodia’s national fish the Giant Barb, the Giant Snakehead, the Giant Siamese Carp, and Barramundi.

Mekong River FishingFew countries are as dependent on fishing as Cambodia, where the locals get 80% of their protein intake from eating fish. The Tonle Sap Lake is one of the most productive fisheries in the world, as a result of this fishing is very much a part of the local culture and Cambodians are excellent fishermen, even though the fishing methods they use have changed little over the centuries. Fishing is celebrated in traditional dance and even immortalised on the walls of the magnificent ancient Angkor Wat temple. Indeed, the ancient Angkor Empire would never have existed if it were not for the seasonal flows of the Mekong River and the Tonle Sap’s annual flooding where the lake increases in size by over 5 times.

Cambodia Fishing ToursFishing in Cambodia is not the same as fishing in neighbouring Thailand where all the fishing venues have been commercialised and largely over-fished. Cambodia’s lakes and rivers are unspoiled and completely natural, boasting specimen fish to unbelievable weights and holding potential world records. In addition, our unique fishing multi-day adventure boat trips on the Mekong River and Tonle Sap Lake offer the world’s most adventurous anglers the chance to enter the record books themselves by landing these monster freshwater fish. Anglers will visit small riverside villages where they experience traditional Cambodian life, learn how the locals fish and enjoy tasty fish based Cambodian cuisine.

Mekong River FishingOnly now, after 9 years of planning is Cambodia ready to open it’s unique fishing locations to the world and set a new standard in angling adventures. Asia Adventures employs Cambodia’s ONLY team of elite fishing guides (expatriate & local) that use their lifetime’s knowledge & experience of fishing the waterways of Cambodia to create these exclusive fishing packages. Either choose one of our standard packages, join one of our set date tours, or create your own tailor made adventure. Each of our packages contains full details, accurate information and honest prices for you to make an informed choice.

Cambodia is the next ultimate fishing destination for the world’s most serious anglers that wish to experience adventure fishing in a pristine environment. In addition to the awesome fishing available the country has a rich and proud culture, impressive natural scenery, and the spirit and warmth of the Cambodian people is delightful. Be a Cambodian fishing pioneer and cast your line in our direction at

Detail Itinerary

Day 1: Phnom Penh to Chi Pat – / L / D

The remote, riverside community of Chi PhatAn early start as you leave Phnom Penh and drive the 190km (3 – 4 hours) to the riverside community of Andoung Tuk. Here you board a boat for the approx. 2 hour upstream journey along the Preak Piphot river. During this journey through mangrove forests, as well as witnessing typical river edge villages and homes, be on the lookout for birds and mammals coming to the waters edge to drink. Upon arrival in the small, remote community of Chi Pat you will be welcomed at the Community Ecotourism Office and have a ‘Welcome Lunch’. After being shown to you guesthouse (basic facilities inc. mosquito net & fan), you will visit some nearby rapids where you can relax in the cool refreshing waters. Later you will be taken to the local community’s reforestation project where you can help by planting a tree (donation included). You will enjoy a lovely sunset atop ‘Bald Mounatin’ before returning to the village for dinner. It is then an early night to be prepared for an early start the following day.

Trekking in Cambodia’s Cardamom Mountains Waking early whilst it is still dark you meet your community guide and forest cook and board you motorboat just as day is breaking and sail along the cool waters with the early morning mists rising from them. As the sun rises and you are entertained by the skies changing colours you can enjoy your packed breakfast. Soon you turn off the Preak Piphot river and sail up the secluded and winding Pruit River. After an hour the motorboat cuts its engines and you transfer to a traditional row boat and continue upstream. Now being engine-less you can really appreciate the stillness of your surroundings and hear the bird call from the thick forests lining the river. This is the ideal opportunity to see the area’s birdlife as well as watching out for other wildlife such as monkeys and flying squirrels. Eventually the rowboats arrive at a small clearing where you disembark, and begin your Cardamom trekking. Here you disappear into the forest and follow the winding and undulating trail which is full of exotic sights, scents and sounds, including gibbons calling from high up in the tree tops. Lunch is taken next to a scenic river and you will be amazed at how quickly your forest cook sets up the camp fire and prepares a hot, basic but tasty meal. After relaxing the trek continues, on route the guide will point out various signs of wildlife, plus various plants which have many uses. Try the delicious forest leaves and fruits which he suggests. In the mid afternoon you reach your low-impact campsite and hammocks are strung up. In the late afternoon you may wish to walk to Veal Ta Prak the nearby grassy clearing / watering hole. Here you can look out for hornbills, parrots, wild pigs, deer and monkeys. Then it is back to camp where the forest cook will have prepared your dinner. The rest of the evening can be spent around the campfire exchanging stories and gazing up into the starry night.

Camping in CambodiaAnother early start as you return to Veal Ta Prak to spot more wildlife. Back at camp breakfast will be waiting, and once camp is ‘struck’ your Cardamom trekking continues as you head towards the small mountain community of O’Kay. Here you will learn about the villagers lifestyles and have lunch. After lunch you visit the nearby O’Malu waterfall where you can swim and relax. You overnight at the O’Malu campsite where you will also be treated to another enjoyable dinner in the jungle.

After breakfast you continue trekking through the foothills and jungles of the Cardamom Mountains crossing various rivers, you will stop to relax at one of these rivers and have lunch. Once you reach the riverside camping location of O’Peam Krovanh you are free to relax in the refreshing waters whilst your cook prepares another jungle dinner. Once more a night in your hammock under the stars awaits.

Burial Jars, CambodiaAfter breakfast and a refreshing morning dip in the river you continue trekking heading for the enigmatic ‘hidden’ burial jar location. Before reaching the jar site you will have lunch next to the scenic O’Peam Pika river. After lunch and a short steep climb you arrive at a rock outcrop where you will discover the mystical ancient burial jars, and small wooden coffins. These were only recently discovered and very little is know about them. After pondering the history and taking in the expansive views you will trek to your camping site, O’Ampov. Once again your cook will prepare dinner as you sit back and relax. Enjoy your final night out in the openness of the Cardamom Mountains and take in the incredibly starry night.

Cardamom Mountain WaterfallAn early start today as you trek back towards Chi Pat. Trekking along old logging trails which pass open landscapes you will have beautiful views of the Cardamom Mountains. You will take a well-earned rest at the impressive Tuk Vet waterfall. And then further on stop for lunch at the ‘hidden’ waterfall of O’Spot which you can walk behind and discover the ‘bat cave’. This waterfall is perfect for taking a refreshing shower and jumping into its plunge pool! As you get closer to Chi Pat you walk through banana plantations and vegetables patches. Just before reaching the village you cross the wide Steung Chhay Chrey river, a great opportunity for a late afternoon swim. After checking-in to your homestay accommodation and freshening up, a tasty dinner will be served at the Community Restaurant. The rest of the evening is then free at leisure to wander around the village and experience rural community night life.

After a leisurely breakfast you will bid farewell to Chi Pat as you journey back to Andoung Tuk. On arrival at Andoung Tuk you will meet your waiting vehicle and be returned to Phnom Penh, allowing you time to reflect on the wonderful and unique Cardamom Mountain trekking experience you have enjoyed in the seldom visited mountains of Cambodia, and taking away very fond memories…
N.B. from Andoung Tuk you may choose to travel on to the beaches of Sihanoukville or Koh Kong (the border with Thailand).
